I thought you said you wouldn't even have the money until September.

And don't worry, like I said way before, I'm on this, I'll give you a full detailed analysis within the weekend if you need it.

ALRIGHT!!!
I'm ready to cry here from reading so many reviews and comparisons, so here by will follow the stuff I have found that I think are good for you.
Know this though: It's your money, and I suggest you know what you're buying with it, I'll tell you about the models and such, but make sure you know by yourself what you're getting.
I'll put each model in a separate post for convenience sake.

Well, this one is different from the first two, as it's not a brand name model, nor is it buyable at a physical locale. And also, you know my opinions on IBuyPower in terms of quality of products and business, but this one is a great deal, so let me tell you about it and you can decide. First off, the screen is the smallest so far and the resolution isn't so high, but that could mean little to you depending on what you do with it. The processor is the best P series (the new centrino 2 ones) out so far, so it's the best dual-core processor right now, better than the two mentioned before. While this has 4GB of RAM, unfortunately it does not have the DDR3 like the other two, but it is still the fastest DDR2 speed available for notebooks. The graphics card is still a 9000 series, but is weaker than the last two, since it's only 9600. The killer app of this thing is the drive though. I nearly fell off my chair when I saw that they had Solid State drives for so little, if you don't understand why, I highly suggest you look up solid state drives and learn about their amazingness. This one also has the fancy 5300 Intel pro wireless as well, and Vista Ultimate 64-bit, which could be nice. The case looks kinda bizarre though, so you should take a close look at it before you buy. There have been many good stories from people buying from ibuypower as well as bad stories, so decide for yourself if you'd want to take the risk (if one does exist) for the deals they have.

That's all for now, there was a Lenovo model I was looking at, but their site wasn't working, so maybe I'll throw that one up if I can get it later, if it's any good.

Well, I'm glad I could help.
And honestly, out of everything I saw in your price range for the stuff you wanted, that one would be the one I would get if I was in your place for a few reasons.
The P series processors are pretty future proof, and even if you don't have the best of the P series, they have the same socket, so you can just upgrade it.
DDR3 is the new standard for desktops, and just breaking into the laptop market, so anything with it is definitely the way to go, and if they come out faster speeds of DDR3 sticks, then you can just upgrade, whereas DDR2 is basically done for.
As for drives, since SSD is still touchy and expensive, the fastest largest sata drive is preferable until the SSD's become more realistic, and then since they are all 2.5" drives anyway, you can upgrade. And that 9800 graphic card is only topped in performance by four other cards as of now. Not to mention the 1080p screen resolution is the only way to go if you're anticipating the future of multimedia.

Futureproof performance at an affordable price ftw.

And about the customization, don't count on it, especially since Gateway switched to a 100% indirect model, they basically ship out premade models to stores (both on and off line).

You'd better. And by it you mean OpenOffice right?

Also, when you get your laptop, I recommend that if you an got installation disc with it (which by law you'd better), wipe the whole thing and install from scratch.
