(i know you do not like vista xander but it has grown on me) I sometimes wonder if you listen at all. And I seriously question the note-taking potential in notebooks, other than tablets. Seriously, think about it, what's easier to take math notes with, a computer or your hand? Notebooks do not save anyone paper, don't think for a second somehow a notebook would be better than the standard pen and paper for academia note taking. Just because you see it in the movies means shit. There's a million problems with that logic in 90% of cases. Yet another reason why there's no reason to get a laptop for college. Anyhow, here will be my suggestions on laptop purchases. Keep in mind at this level of low-budget buying, you are very limited in terms of customization and differentiation. In fact most notebooks in the sub $900 that aren't special minis are basically the same. Most have extremely similar parts (or the same). And also realize most department stores stock these low level laptops at the same price as the manufacturer, so there's little difference in buying from best buy and buying online. Suggestion #1 Dell Inspiron 1525 @~$749.99 Intel® Core™2 Duo mobile processor T5750 2.0GHz 3GB 667MHz DDR2 memory 15.4" XGA widescreen with TrueLife (1280 x 800) Serial ATA (5400 rpm) 250GB Double-layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 Built-in Dell 1395 wireless mini-card (802.11b/g) Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1 This is a very popular model, cheap and made by Dell, which many people like. Unfortunately, I really do not understand the fascination with this notebook. I honestly think it blows. And keep in mind I've had hands-on experience with this thing. The ugliness factor is enough, as you can get it in many different colors, but it only goes on the outside coloring of the notebook, and the inside stays an ugly silver color. The keyboard is badly placed and is unresponsive in terms of tactile feedback. The screen is nice and big but is actually quite horrid. It has a really bad plastic covering on the LCD that kills the image completely, and produces a horrible glare. Finally on the performance side of this, even though I've used notebooks with almost the same specs, this one seems to be slower. Oh and the built is actually not so good, feels very cheap and plasticy, not like it would hold up to few drops. More to come.

That's not at all what I'm saying, in fact, the whole time I've been trying to say that you really don't have a realistic reason to get one at all, at any price range. And jeese, I only gave one option so far, granted in my opinion it was the worst option, but still. At the price range you already had you could get a decent notebook that could easily own everything except gaming. I just hadn't gotten to telling you about the better ones yet. - Amanderson wrote:
- wolframmmm.
NoAnd they don't even make that model anymore. - Justin wrote:

however i do not know how big it will grow Well, give me an estimated price range you could prolly afford and I will tell you the best of the best. I was collecting info on models in the $700-$899 Price range before. Do you think it would be any higher now? As soon as you let me know I'll continue giving you good suggestions, that is if you want me to.

'Kay, I'll give ya the full throwdown tomorrow, though something to think about, apparently the Centrino 2 platform comes out next month, whether that means anything to anyone I don't know. Though the $2000 and under price range opens a lot more and better options, I'll do my best to check not only the preconfigured models, but the customizable ones as well, and try to give you the most gamer-friendly options.

| I agree with Xander, cause as well Justin, you might as well just go and sell your desktop then, cause we know how you are, once you upgrade, you ignore the lesser versions, and where would you put your desktop anyways? You get shitty wireless in your room, so all that really leave is your living room, unless you swap rooms with your rents, which I'm assuming won't happen. So either way, in the eyes of your desktop, it's going to be slashing it's wrists soon... If you sell your desktop, you'd make at least SOME money off of it. Eh, oh well though... I'm just looking to get a lighter weight laptop than my beast I have... 15lb's isn't so nice to carry... >.< But I'll be just fune for now with this, I'll be old school and hand write my notes, and as well, I shall be looking for a laptop with the num pad... | |

Maybe you should look into that sale before it goes away.

Maybe you should look into that sale before it goes away. Apparently nice non-gaming notebooks aren't good enough for him, hence why earlier ideas were shot down. - Ben wrote:

first? Because from the looks of it, there is very slight chance I'll be able to actually drive you to AR on a daily basis.... You know, this is the exact point I've been trying to make the entire time. One or two grand is a lot of money, and I can think of a hundred things that I bet a college-faring teen such as Justin would prolly need more than a gaming notebook.
