PostSubject: Notebooks   Notebooks Empty25/06/08, 08:12 pm

So i am investing in a notebook for college however i am having issues deciding on brand...

i want my computer to be able to play warhammer so the company would need to offer a half decent graphics card and ram...

does anyone have any suggestions?

You could try a Window's-fairing computer; but try not to get Vista. Vista has a load of issues - among those being the inability to play a lot of games. So be sure to save enough money to plunk down for a copy of Windows XP. Not to mention, most laptops running windows will need a few hardware upgrades before they're ready to play the high-end games.

Or, you could simply get a Macintosh laptop. Many have the capability to play high-end games right off the bat. The only problem is you would still need to plunk down some extra money to buy some sort of windows emulator like bootcamp or leopard - being that Macintosh computers lack the capability to play games on their own.

Each side has their own problems, pro's, and cons - for instance Window's has a ton of error messages, but it's fairly easy to fix if it crashes or breaks, while a Macintosh doesn't have error messages, yet once it's gone, it's gone - there is no raising it from the dead and you may as well buy a new one.

It's really all in your preference. Except there is one must: get a damn mouse. That stupid sensor pad is so fricking sensitive on both laptops, not to mention it's frustrating to use. One accidental brush of your wrist will send your mouse reeling across the screen - and if you're playing a game, you'll find yourself running in circles, and frustrating your allies with your slowness.

Ya know what, notebooks are the most useless pieces of garbage ever, so says me.
If you want my expert opinion on the matter, don't get a notebook, they suck and are inferior in every way to a desktop.
Like I tell everyone when they ask what to get for a computer, get what you need and no more, computers are too expensive and go out of style way too fast for you to be getting any more; and what I tell everyone regarding college computer buying: College is absolutely no reason to have portability.

But, if your mind is set on notebook buying, I'll tell you what I know.
DO NOT BUY HP OR DELL, damn I cannot stress this enough. Buying piece of crap mainstream company BS that I could put together for $20 is like throwing your money away. Do your research. Don't shy away from Vista, yeah it sucks, but not nearly as much as everyone (including myself) makes it sound. If you want Windows, get the newest version of the OS, simple as that. And if you do get Vista, don't get sucked into the marketing gimmick of ULTIMATE IS THE ULTIMATE!!! No, there is barely any difference operation-wise between the cheapest and the costliest. Buy the cheapest one that suits your needs and be happy.

As for models, here's THE notebook of today, trust me if I'm saying it's good, it really is, because everyone knows I hate everything :P.

Asus M70Sa

About $1,500 and gives most desktops a run for their money.

@manda Lol, it's okay Wolframmy, we all love you!

Though Justin, you make me laugh, a gaming laptop is really an oxymoron, and from your reaction to a 1.5 grand price tag is also laughable. Expect to pay at least 2.5 grand and up for actual gaming desktop level performance in a notebook. Trust me when I say notebooks are not where it's at for gaming and if gaming is the foremost thing in mind when buying a computer, you shouldn't be buying a notebook.

Oh hey, side thought into anyone getting new computers: GET A 64-BIT OPERATING SYSTEM!!!

Since new technology these days takes advantage of such increases in bittage, having an old 32-bit OS really won't cut it. Switching from a 32 to 64 OS increases performance by leaps and bounds. Of course it doesn't help that Vista comes in both versions and most OEM dealers try to skamp you off with the 32.

Only thing to think about if you did end up getting that one Justin, is to find a way to get a 64-bit Vista on it, because with the version that usually comes on it, 1GB of the RAM just sits dormant, because it can only handle 3GB with 32-bits.

Otherwise I can recommend some pretty good desktop builds for the same price.
