Well, there are ways of breeding selectively for a hidden power move, but it's so ridiculously complicated in third and fourth gen. that it's not worth it. Second gen. was actually feasible.

I did manage to land a hidden power: ice (56-59), which would be useful against things like Dragonite, Salamance, and Garchomp, but not much else (at least, not when considering a 90 base power Psychic with STAB).

A lot of pokemon can learn Ice Beam, isn't that just easier?

Ice beam is easier and more effective, but, you see, when you say "a lot of pokemon," what it really comes down to is about 230 pokemon or so, including duplicates like Deoxis (I gave it a rough hand count on Bulbapedia). That still easily leaves half of the available pokemon unable to learn it. Also, I'm making a psychic team, and although there are quite a few psychics that can learn it, there are also quite a few that cannot.

Also, the joy of having a hidden power is that it's hidden. Nobody expects your Vaporeon to be packing an electric move until your hidden power: electric annihilates their Gyarados.

The problem is that it's a pain in the, err...rear to get a specific high-power hidden power.

Then again, no one expects a Gyarados to have 100 base Spec. Def along with 31 IV's. =P So your 60 power Electric Hidden Power might not be worth as much of the afore mentioned pain. =D

Lol, are you going to have a Special Defense trained Gyarados Marshal? ;)

Realistically though, even a Gyarados fully stat trained and IVed in both HP and Special Defense takes 2/5 of its health in damage from a Vaporeon with absolutely no EV training. If trained, it gets over the halfway mark rather quickly, and that is if Gyarados is fully stat trained and IVed in both HP and Special Defense. So, it'll take a lot longer, sure, but I'll trust my leftovers/aqua ring Vaporeon any day (until you bring out the Zapdos, then I'm gone).

It'd be interesting to see a Gyarados Vs Vaporeon.
Vaporeon's Def is a tad low, but it has godly hp, whereas Gyarados has great attack, but a x4 weakness that Vaporeon can use (Hidden Power Only, highest power is 70.). I wonder how much damage a max attack Gyara-Giga Impact could do...

I will have my psychic team done...sometime. I'm two levels away from having my first pokemon ready, minus moveset (which requires between 98 and 156 BP, and 30 levels). This first one is my pride and joy though, so the rest should pop out rather faster (I hope).

Just got my 6th Kanto badge, so it's time to farm the Elite Four while I
still can. My first Pokemon is fully leveled, now just for the 98 BP. I
think I'm going to get the rest of my pokemon (well, the ones I can get
prior to beating all the gyms) before farming for BP. We can be farming buddies Pokefags - Page 4 313426

Started farming BP again...I seem to have forgotten how slow and dull it is. Until the frontier brain decides to show up on a whim, of course. It's nice to know that they can interrupt you at any time, for no reason, despite none of this being in the official rules. Way to go guys...

Damn Blastoise knocked off my winning streak by no more than 10 HP.

So, fellow Pokefags...
If you lived in the Pokemon world, where would you live?
The main story's crisis' are over, and there are ways to get to other zones, but they may take some time. Here's a map of Poke-earth.

Use this if you need to know names and stuff.

The candidates for me are:
Cerulean City, Kanto.
Olivine City, Johto.
Mauville City, Hoenn.
Canalave City, Sinnoh.

Large City, Hoenn? You mean Lilycove, I guess.
Sinnoh would be Jubilife, Hearthome or Veilstone.
